TITLE:  PCMCIA, 3Com 3C589B, Ascentia P and J
 
 
ISSUE 
 
   The Ascentia P or J systems may not recognize the 3Com 3C589B PC 
   card. The system may hang when "Net Start" is run in the 
   AUTOEXEC.BAT when using Windows 3.1x with NDIS 2 Drivers.    

 
BACKGROUND 
 
   The PCMCIA 3Com 3C589B card needs to be configured with the same 
   settings as referred to in the PROTOCOL.INI file that is located 
   in the Windows directory . The card may also need to be 
   configured using the configuration utility supplied.
   
   When using the default installation of a 3Com PCMCIA card, the 
   interrupt setting and the I/O address setting are not added to 
   the PROTOCOL.INI file.    

 
ACTION 
 
   To resolve the issue in the Ascentia P, edit the PROTOCOL.INI 
   file. Before attempting to edit this file it is recommended that 
   a backup copy of the file be made. After doing so, edit the file 
   as follows: 
     
   
      [ELPC3]
      DriverName=ELPC3$
      ioaddress=0x300
      interrupt=0x3
   
   To resolve the issue in the Ascentia J, edit the PROTOCOL.INI 
   file as follows: 
   
      [ELPC3]
      DriverName=ELPC3$
      ioaddress=0x300
      interrupt=11    

 
NOTES 
 
   The top settings are the default settings of the 3Com board. To 
   change these settings, the user can run the Install program from 
   the diskette supplied with the 3C589 card. Change the 
   configuration to reflect the changes in the PROTOCOL.INI file. 
   The latest 3C589 configuration utility can be downloaded from the 
   3COM's web site at http://www.3com.com or ftp.3com.com. The file 
   name is 3C589N.EXE.
