AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1652 01/08/97
TITLE: Windows 95 APM, Suspend and CD-ROM
ISSUE
Computer systems configured with CD-ROM drives do not perform the
Suspend To Disk or RAM function when Power Management is enabled
under Windows 95.
This issue may affect all systems that use Windows 95 Advanced
Power Management.
BACKGROUND
The activity caused by Windows 95 continually polling the IDE
controller looking for CD-ROM drive activity prevents Suspend To
Disk from ever taking place.
ACTION
To use the Suspend To Disk function under Windows 95 Power
Management, disable the CD-ROM "Auto Play" function in Windows 95
as follows:
1. While in Control Panel, click on the System icon, then
on the Device Manager tab.
2. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon, then double-click on
the icon for the specific CD-ROM drive installed in
the system.
3. Click on the Settings tab, then uncheck the "Auto
Insert Notification" box.
4. Click OK.
These steps prevent Windows 95 from polling the IDE controller.
